Oakdale High wrestling fans will catch their first varsity glimpse of 10 new weights among 14 total classes of the prep wrestling season on Saturday at the 36th Annual James Riddle Classic.

The National Federation of State High School Associations Wrestling Rules Committee approved a shift in most of the longtime weights for high school competitors, and the weights debut Saturday, Dec. 10 for local varsity competitors at the 20-team Oakdale host tourney.

Oakdale opened the season with 16 total medals across 14 weights a season ago, and should expect heavy opposition in 2011 from a tough field of competitors.

“There should be some pretty decent individuals here, so most of our guys should get tested to see where they are and what kind of shape they are in,” Oakdale assistant coach Steve Strange said. “We should be ready to get back on the mat.”

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. with an expected 4:30 p.m. start to first place matches after three championship rounds in each weight’s 16-man bracket.

The program is rolling on the momentum of two successful junior varsity tournaments to start the season. Frank Trent (182 pounds) and Cameron McLean (160) landed first place medals at the Valley Oak League novice tournament on Saturday at Sierra High.

Wyatt Hjelm (182), Quinton Castenada (145) and Dominic Orvis (126) placed second while Landon Ichord (220), Christian Alexander (138) and Miguel Ybarra (195) were third. Rodrigo Rodriguez was fourth at 152 as well.
