209 Multimedia Ethics and Correction Policies

Section 1: Statement of Ethics

  • Truth and Accuracy: We always verify information before publishing. We never manufacture quotes, sources, or data.
  • Independence: We do not accept gifts, free travel, or favors that influence coverage. Editorial content remains separate from advertising.
  • Conflicts of Interest: Writers must disclose personal or financial ties to a story topic. They will be recused if a conflict exists.
  • Fairness: We seek comments from the subjects of critical stories. We give them a fair window of time to respond.
  • Plagiarism: We never pass off others' work as our own. All external data and quotes must be credited.

Section 2: Correction Policy

  • Promptness: We correct factual errors quickly, clearly, and conspicuously once verified.
  • Transparency: We do not quietly delete or change errors without notice ("stealth editing").
  • Placement: Corrections must appear at the top or bottom of the digital article. For print, they must run in a designated, consistent "Corrections" box.
  • Standard Format: Every correction must state the exact date of the change, the original error, and the correct information.
  • Clarity over Blame: We focus on providing the correct facts. We do not use defensive language or blame individual staff members.
