Past, Present Mustangs Shine At OAA Program
OHS Mustangs

The 50th annual Outstanding Athlete Awards (OAA) program staged recently at the S.O.S. Club in Modesto saw plenty of hardware coming Oakdale’s way. The night honored local athletes for their 2016 accomplishments. Oakdale was the big winner of the evening where players and coaches from the past – as well as from the present – were honored.

Legendary football coach Jack Walker took home the Darrell Phillips Coaches Award. Walker coached Oakdale football and track from 1954 to 1987 and remains one of the most iconic figures in school history. The Darrell Phillips Coaches Award is handed out to past coaches in recognition of their careers and influence in today’s high school sports.

Hannah Chappell, a 2016 Oakdale High School graduate, was named the 2016 High School Girls Athlete Award recipient. Chappell won four Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championships and three state medals for her discus career in Oakdale. Chappell was nominated for the award three straight years, and this was her first time winning the award. She just finished her freshman year at Alabama.

Being honored for her freshman season at Humboldt State, Hanna Holland took home the Women’s Open Division Award that honors college athletes that went to local high schools. In her first year at Humboldt State, Holland helped her team reach the NCAA Division II Finals. She led the league in batting average at .413, on base percentage .520, 58 runs scored on 83 hits and drew 42 walks. She also broke the school’s stolen base record with 70 steals; the old record was 53. Holland sat out her sophomore season with an ACL injury.

Oakdale football was also honored for their record year. The 2016 CIF State Champions were named team of the year and senior Will Semone was named Boys Prep Award winner, handed out to the best male high school athlete.
