Competition this past week marked further advancement for Oakdale High’s varsity girls and boys’ water polo teams into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, while the Mustang varsity boys soccer team saw their season come to a close in El Dorado.

Following is a recap of postseason action for each highly successful prep program.

Water Polo

First-round Division II postseason wins for Oakdale’s boys and girls gave both programs a shot at host team Woodcreek on Tuesday, Nov. 9, though results were not available at press time.

The boys contest sported a considerable advantage for Woodcreek, considering the Timberwolves weren’t faced with Oakdale’s two-hour trek at 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

Mustang coach Alan Stender said the team reviewed game film in the morning hours on Monday to prepare for Tuesday’s early rise.

Oakdale boys are rolling on the momentum of an 11-4 blowout of Mira Loma in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 5. Michael Tripp made 10 saves at the net while Jeremy Neathery snagged three goals in the win. Adam Lahey and Brandon Terwilliger scored twice while Cory Onken, Casey Whitley, Braden Lee and Neal Cadra each recorded goals as well.

Oakdale girls topped Whitney in a one-sided 13-2 showing on Saturday. Goalkeepers Morgan Kinyon and Hayley Benson made five saves each while Savannah Stender exploded for five goals. Carly Kendig and Jessica Myers scored two goals apiece while Jamie Lahey, Katie Vanderberg, Cassie Lee and Vikki Swarthout found the net once.

If Oakdale girls won Tuesday, they will see a Nov. 11 showdown with Sierra Foothill League champ, Granite Bay, or Solano County Athletic Conference runner-up, El Camino.

A win for the Oakdale boys would grant the team a chance to play SFL No. 3 seed Bear River or highly touted Capital Athletic League champ, Rio Americano.

Soccer

Oakdale’s late bid into the Division III Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs paved the way for a hard fought 1-0 loss to Sierra Valley League No. 3 seed, Union Mine, on Thursday.

Oakdale managed nine shots on goal, but couldn’t find a tally to answer a first half mark from Diamondback forward Kyle Listar.

Oakdale keepers made 10 saves in the loss.

The Mustangs end the year at 9-3-2 in Valley Oak League play and 13-7-3 overall. Oakdale outscored opponents 71-28 for the season and saw a combined 129 saves from Scotty McNeill and Sam Paboojian.

Senior Robert Gilbert (23 goals, seven assists), senior Antonio Munoz (17 goals, five assists), junior Mark Ortiz (nine goals, six assists) and freshman Davis Harper (11 assists) led Oakdale’s offensive efforts this season.
