Hard hitting Mixed Martial Arts action returns to the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort on Saturday, Aug. 27. Heading to Jackson will be Last Stand Fight Team member Sergio Vazquez. The Oakdale based Vazquez (4-2) will be taking on Sacramento’s Angelo Trevino (2-1) in Welterweight action at Global Knock-Out 7.

“I got a late start in the MMA world. I am 34 years old and I started three years ago in Modesto,” the Spanish speaking Vazquez said with the help of an interpreter. “I knew some of the fighters from Oakdale and I came over here (Oakdale) to try it out and I liked the atmosphere and the fighters here. So I decided to stick around.”

Regardless of his late start to the sport, Vazquez realized his love of cage combat at the age of 30 and realized that this is what he was meant to do.

“I can’t describe the feeling. It is hard to put into words why I do what I do, or what the big draw to it is for me. I just know that I love it. I love everything about it. I take a beating or I give one,” Vazquez said, laughing.

Although soft spoken, there is nothing shy about Vazquez’s confidence level.

“He (Trevino) is an accomplished grappler and wrestler. However, I am confident in my striking ability and that will carry me through the fight,” Vazquez predicted.

The hard hitter has been training under Professor Tom Theofanopoulos since joining the gym in late 2012. For this fight Vazquez has taken a different approach in his training.

“For this fight I am very focused. He is a very good fighter and wrestler, I need to be prepared for that,” Vazquez shared.

He last fought in the octagon on Oct. 18, 2014 when he lost to John Tole at Global Knockout 2. Prior to that loss, Vazquez was riding a three fight winning streak over Josh Thornburg, Damon Taylor and Adam Corrigan.

There are 11 fights scheduled on the evening, including Vazquez’s Last Stand Fight Team teammate Angel Deanda of Modesto. Deanda (14-5) is taking on Mike Jasper (9-3) of Elite MMA. For tickets and more information on the fight, log onto the website at globalknockout.com.
