School has returned to session and as students return to the classrooms, coaches also make their return to their respective sports. Oakdale High School has a busy fall season ahead of them. Football, girl’s tennis, girl’s golf, cross country, volleyball, boys and girls water polo will all have contests over the next few months.

For the water polo programs, Savannah Martin will be the head coach for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Former coach Diane Kline retired from the position at the conclusion of last year. With big shoes to fill, Martin will make her home season debut on Sept. 4 when both teams welcome in Turlock.

Grant Miller will take over for the girl’s tennis program. Miller stepped in as an interim head coach late last season for Judy Vejar. Miller also coaches the boy’s team in the spring, where the Mustang boys reached the Sac-Joaquin Section title game last year. On Aug. 27, the girls open Valley Oak League action against East Union.

Guy Fowler and Lori Vargas return for cross country. Vic Moreno serves as an assistant. Friday, Aug. 23 will be the annual Red/Gold Fox Trot Scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. Heather Gonzales returns for year number three for the varsity volleyball team. Gonzales has led the Lady Mustangs to playoff appearances and is seeking her first section title. The girls open the regular season on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at home against Manteca.

Lee McGhee and Jeremy Fields return to the golf course for another year at the helm for the girl’s golf team. The girls program has been a powerhouse in the VOL and in section and look to make another run this fall. Thursday, Sept. 5 the girls open the regular season against Kimball. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.

Trent Merzon and his staff all return to the gridiron. Merzon and the boys look to win another VOL title and return to the postseason. Oakdale opens the season up the hill on Friday, Aug. 23 at Sonora.
