Blanche May Stewart, 94, died Saturday, March 26 at Kaiser Hospital, Modesto.

She was born in Danville. She lived in Oakdale from the time she was about five years old until 1956. Her grandfather, William Thomas Bond was a brick mason and came to the U.S. from South Africa to help rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. He later sent for his wife and daughters and they lived in the Bay Area for several years and then moved to Oakdale where he built a tile house, which still exists.

She returned to Oakdale frequently to visit her mother, sisters and friends.

Mrs. Stewart moved around for a few years, as her husband was promoted in banking, and then moved to Modesto in 1961.

She was a wife and mother.

She is survived by her children, Catherine Anderson, Vicki Stewart, a teacher at Fair Oaks Elementary; sister, Jackie Rees of Oregon; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Stewart; sisters, Nadine Long of Oakdale, Marilyn Breien of San Jose; and mother, Winifred Kowitz of Oakdale.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Oakdale Citizens Cemetery.
