The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Wednesday, April 8 through Monday, April 13. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, APRIL 13
Battalion 2: Engine 26 attended a public education event at Riverbank Language Academy.
Battalion 2 crews worked on station and apparatus maintenance, and trained in EMS skills including cardiac arrest.
Battalion 5: Crews in Battalion 5 conducted their weekly apparatus maintenance checks and station cleanup.
7:53 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 23, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded to the 900 block of East F Street in Oakdale for a potential structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a power pole with a streetlight at the top. On the bottom of the pole were exposed live wires which were touching the base of a metal water pipe. This energized pipe burned and melted several feet of plastic and rubber hose that was attached to it. Engine 27 secured the area, extinguished the smoldering fire and called PG&E out to secure the power to the pole. The incident was then closed and all units cleared.
SUNDAY, APRIL 12
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies rotated through swift water boat training on the Stanislaus River.
Crews worked on online target solutions assignments.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 crews conducted water rescue boat training on the Stanislaus River.
SATURDAY, APRIL 11
Battalion 2: Battalion Chief preparation training was held in joint-attendance at Station 22.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Crews trained on various subjects such as hose stretches and estimations and drafting with a portable pump for company level drill day.
Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 attended the annual Oakdale Rodeo Parade. Crews visited with members of the community and gave little ones a tour of the fire engines.
11:34 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded for reports of a potential structure fire on Reynolds Avenue in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene and met with the reporting party, who stated they could smell something burning in the home. Crews checked the attic, crawl spaces and all appliances and could not locate any issues or smell of anything burning.
FRIDAY, APRIL 10
Battalion 2: Crews reviewed Vacant and Abandoned Building operations.
Water Rescue and Boat Operator training was conducted by Stations 22, 23, 24, and 26 on the Stanislaus River in joint efforts with MST units.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Water Rescue 28 and WR29 conducted boat operator training in Knights Ferry, in preparation for the upcoming busy season on Stanislaus County waterways. Training objectives were hydraulic feature recognition and assessment, boat positioning and route selection, and victim approach and recovery techniques.
THURSDAY, APRIL 9
Battalion 5: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Companies rotated through quarterly EMS training. Training focused on policy review and new treatment protocols.
Battalion 5 attended the Oakdale Fire District Board Meeting in Valley Home.
Companies trained on extrication and stabilization equipment carried on Engines 27 and 28.
10:38 p.m. – Engine 27 to Mustang Drive for a medical aid. Crews arrived on scene to find the patient in cardiac arrest. Pit crew CPR was initiated, ALS care started and Lucas Device attached. After 10 minutes of care, ROSC was achieved. The patient was packaged and transported to a local hospital with two firefighters on board to assist.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
Battalion 5: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 29 completed weekly apparatus checks and station maintenance at Station 30.
Companies rotated through quarterly EMS training.
Battalion 5 attended the Valley Home MAC meeting.
