A two-vehicle collision near Knights Ferry left one woman dead and a passenger in her vehicle with injuries after the car they were in collided with another vehicle shortly before 10 p.m. on Aug. 16.

According to the Modesto CHP, their office received notification of an injury accident a State Route 108 near Knights Ferry. CHP officers and emergency personnel arriving on the scene located two women pinned in an overturned vehicle.

“Both parties were extricated from the vehicle and transported to Memorial Hospital,” the CHP report noted.

The driver of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, identified as Catherine Gibson, 66, of Douglas Flat, died of her injures at the hospital. The passenger, 61-year-old Jo Anne Gibson, also of Douglas Flat, was taken to Memorial with what were described as minor injuries.

Authorities said Catherine Gibson was driving the Equinox and was stopped at a stop sign while traveling southbound on Kennedy Road. At the same time, a 2017 Infinity Q70 was westbound on Highway 108, driven by a 66-year-old Hilmar man. The CHP report indicated that Gibson stopped at the stop sign but then failed to yield to the westbound traffic and entered the intersection. The driver of the Infinity was unable to avoid striking the left side of the Equinox, which then overturned and came to rest on its right side within the westbound lane of the highway. The driver of the Infinity was also taken to Memorial, suffering from moderate injuries.

State Route 108 was temporarily closed and traffic was detoured through the area while the emergency crews tended to the victims and law enforcement conducted the investigation.

The highway was reopened shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, Aug. 17. The initial call of the crash came in to the CHP at 9:57 p.m. Friday.
