Elaine Medina, 85, died Saturday, July 20 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House, Hughson.

She was born in Modesto, the second of three children born to Lydia and Norbert Schiernbeck. In the mid-1930s, her family moved to Oakdale. She graduated from Oakdale High School and continued her education at Modesto Junior College and Merritt College, San Jose. She graduated with a degree in nursing and became a licensed Registered Nurse.

In 1949, she fell in love and married William ‘Bill’ Medina on Dec. 24, 1949. They began their family three years later. Together they raised their four children in Oakdale and Valley Home.

Mrs. Medina was active throughout her life. Her career as an RN included working at the Oakdale Hospital, Dr. Fulkerson’s medical practice, Hunts Cannery and CT Supply as an industrial nurse.

She had a number of hobbies and interests within the community. She and her husband were charter members of the Oakdale Golf and Country Club, where she had two hole-in-ones and achieved a 12 handicap. Golf was very much a part of her life, still playing at age 85.

After retirement, along with golf, she also began a ceramic business where she developed her signature Italian ware. She sold her dishes throughout the valley and to this day people still enjoy these beautiful dishes.

She began playing bridge and was a member of several local bridge groups. She loved the camaraderie and friendships that came with the game. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was also an active member and leader within the Oakdale chapter of TOPS.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She also enjoyed activities and memories with her many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bill; children, Laurie Medina Davis, David (Cathy) Medina, Daniel (Janet) Medina, Dane (Nancy) Medina, 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial was held at her children’s home on July 27. Interment is at Oakdale Citizens Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to Oakdale Citizens Cemetery, P.O. Box 600, Oakdale, CA 95361.
