The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 6. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, OCT. 6
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews rotated through First Due training at the RFTC.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments and conducted Monday apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Companies rotated through the RFTC to participate in the First Due Scheduling training.
SUNDAY, OCT. 5
Battalion 2: 5:40 p.m. – Engines 9, 21, Quint 22, and Battalion 2 were dispatched to a potential structure fire at a residence on the 4700 block of Third Street in Empire. Quint 22 arrived first and reported light smoke from the front of the house, subsequently upgrading the call to a working structure fire and requesting additional units: Engines 1, 3, 23, Medic 1, and Battalion 3. The fire was identified in the front wall and extinguished, with no damage reported to the other rooms. The occupants received a California Fire Foundation SAVE card for assistance with repairs and removal of a beehive located in a corner of the house. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Engine 29 trained on boat operator sign offs while the river flows are up.
Engine 7 trained on access routes to the new North County Road project. Several of the roads in their FMA are either altered, closed, or narrowed.
7:14 p.m. – Engine 7, Engine 26 and Battalion 5 to Claribel and Terminal for a vehicle accident. Engine 7 arrived on scene with three vehicles involved and the roadway partially blocked. Firefighters assisted with treating three patients for minor injuries. All three were transported to local hospitals.
SATURDAY, OCT. 4
Members of the department attended the Firefighter Memorial in Sacramento. Fire Captain Robert Berbena was placed on the memorial wall after passing away from job related cancer.
Battalion 2: Crews worked on various skills for Saturday drills.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 27 trained with Battalion 1 companies on rope rescue techniques, pumping evolutions, and aerial operations.
12:53 p.m. – Engine 28, 26, 7, 9, Engine/Water Tender 23, OES 4617, Water Tender 27, Quint 22, Battalions 2, 5 and Escalon Water Tender 1-1 to Sawyer Road for a working residential structure fire. Initially dispatched as a vegetation fire, crews arrived on scene with a quarter-acre vegetation fire, threatening two barns and had extended into a single wide mobile home. Crews started an aggressive fire attack, containing both fires in just under 20 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene for 90 minutes, overhauling the area. The FIU was on scene conducting a cause and origin investigation. It was found that the fire was started by an unauthorized control burn.
FRIDAY, OCT. 3
Battalion 2: 4:30 p.m. – Modesto E7 (Battalion 1) responded to the 6000 block of Eighth Street in Riverbank (Battalion 2 area) for reports of a subject unresponsive in the residence. E7 arrived on scene and began life saving measures. After over 30 minutes the patient regained pulses. The patient was transported to an area hospital with the firefighter from E7 assisting with care while enroute to the hospital.

8:33 a.m. – Engine 28, E27 and BC5 responded to a vehicle fire at Knox Road and Sierra Road. E28 arrived on scene with a tractor on fire that extended into the trailer. The trailer was full of wood chips, requiring extensive overhaul.
11:06 a.m. – E27, E26, T5 and BC5 responded to the 400 block of Olson Court for the report of a smell of natural gas inside a residence. E27 confirmed there was no gas leak and the odor had dissipated.
3:56 p.m. – Water Rescue 29, WR28, E27, BC5 and Air 101 responded to Honolulu Bar area for a missing kayaker. The reporting party was found on an island and directed WR29 to the last known area. WR29 found the missing kayaker upstream. The kayaker had flipped and become stranded on the riverbank in heavy vegetation. WR29 transported both individuals to shore for medical evaluation. Neither was wearing a life jacket.
THURSDAY, OCT. 2
Battalion 2: Companies began rotating through EMS quarterly training today at the RFTC.
Engine 24 attended college and career day at Waterford High School.
Battalion 2 attended the after-action review of the Lightning Fires.
Battalion 5: Companies rotated through the RFTC for Quarterly EMS training.
9:52 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 26, Quint 22 and BC5 responded to reports of a truck on fire next to a commercial building in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived to find that the driver used a fire extinguisher to stop the fire. Fire cause was electrical.
1:35 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28, and BC5 responded to reports of an injury accident with live electrical wires down on Orange Blossom Road and Sonora Road in Knights Ferry. Engine 29 arrived on scene and located a single vehicle vs. a power pole. Engine 29 checked the occupants and found them uninjured. The roadway was secured by crews until CHP and PG&E arrived.
4:53 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, and BC5 responded to reports of a vehicle accident on Highway 108 and Orange Blossom Road in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene with one vehicle that had spun out and crossed the highway just east of the dip. Driver was not injured. CHP to investigate.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 1
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews checked their EMS medication inventory for expiring medications.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 27 trained on pumping and hose evolutions.
8:30 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to an EMS call in the City of Oakdale.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 30
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed mandated Target Solution assignments.
Crews conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 27 trained on defensive hose operations and deploying the RAM.
