CHP Door

A Friday night accident along River Road claimed the life of an Oakdale man, as his vehicle hit a tree west of Cleveland Avenue.

According to the CHP, dispatchers received a call of a traffic collision on River Road, west of Cleveland Avenue, about 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 24. When officers out of the Modesto CHP office arrived on scene, they determined it was a solo vehicle fatality.

The man was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Nathan Dempster, 38, of Oakdale. CHP officers said he was driving a 2010 Chevrolet westbound on River Road, west of Cleveland, at a high rate of speed. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway on the north side of the road, colliding head on with a tree before coming to rest.

Dempster was pronounced dead at the scene, though he had been wearing his seatbelt. There were no other occupants or vehicles involved. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a contributing factor in the collision.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Officer A. Haskins at the Modesto CHP office, 209-545-7440, ext. 524.
