An evening crash on Thursday, Sept. 10 left one driver injured and resulted in fatal injuries to the other.

Just before 8:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received a call regarding a traffic crash on State Route 108, east of Lancaster Road. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located two vehicles with major crash damage.

According to the CHP report, the driver of a 2020 Ford pickup, a woman out of Jamestown, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The driver of a 2017 Honda sedan succumbed to her injuries at the scene. She was identified as Katherine Duncan, 52, of Modesto. Her identity was released by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary CHP investigation indicates the driver of the Ford pickup was eastbound on State Route 108, east of Lancaster Road. Duncan was driving a Honda sedan westbound on State Route 108, approaching Lancaster Road and the Ford pickup. For unknown reasons, Duncan’s vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines directly into the path of the Ford pickup. A head-on crash occurred. Both vehicles came to rest within the eastbound traffic lane. The CHP report indicates that the Honda sedan immediately caught fire, and the driver was unable to self-extricate.

The driver of the pick-up was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

It was not immediately known whether Duncan was wearing her seat belt when the collision occurred.

The crash is still under investigation. State Route 108 was temporarily closed between Lancaster Road and Kennedy Road during the investigation and emergency response to the scene. Caltrans established a detour through the area with minimal delays to motorists.
