Varsity Softball Girls Corral Timberwolves In VOL Action

In their first home game since being shocked by and falling to Manteca, Oakdale’s varsity softball girls defeated visiting Sierra 9-1 on Wednesday, April 5. The Lady Mustangs combined for seven hits and committed no errors in the win.

Sophomore pitcher Lexi Webb pitched a complete game five hitter in nailing down the win. Webb also went 1-for-2 at the plate and rapped out an RBI double in the fourth inning that gave Oakdale a 2-1 lead. The Lady Mustangs fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but did not cave under the pressure. They tied the game in the third inning on a wild pitch from Lindsay Walljasper that scored Maddy Brewer from third. Oakdale took the lead in the fourth inning on Webb’s big swing that scored Grace Green from first. First baseman Christina Robinette crushed an RBI double to score Webb from second to go up 3-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, Oakdale’s big inning came in the bottom of the sixth where 14 batters came to the plate and the home team scored six runs to pull away from Sierra. Crossing the plate for Oakdale in the inning were Mariyn Waterworth, Green, Webb, Brewer, Chloe Vierra and Farrah Gomes.

The Lady Mustangs capitalized on three Timberwolves’ errors to help win the game. In right field Rilyn Cassaretto made two web gems that got Oakdale out of jams, as well as some sure-handed grabs by shortstop Brittany Bye.

Oakdale’s second game of the week was scheduled for Friday, April 7 against Central Catholic. The Valley Oak League showdown was scheduled to be held at Rainbow Fields but was postponed due to the inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 13.
