With regular season action complete, many Oakdale High School spring sports teams are looking forward to – or are already involved in – postseason play.
Here is a recap of recent action, along with a preview of some playoff contests.
SOFTBALL
Closing out their season with a pair of wins, the Oakdale varsity softball Lady Mustangs were 6-5 winners over Mountain House on Monday, April 27 and then defeated East Union by a 6-4 final on April 29.
They were second in the Valley Oak League with a 9-3 record and went 13-9 overall.
In the finale against East Union, Reese Donaldson had a double, an RBI and a run scored while Audrey Romiti was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Briley Everett was 1-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in.
The girls were awaiting information on their playoff seeding, with brackets slated to be released later this week.
BASEBALL
Oakdale’s varsity baseball team was named as the number six seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 playoffs. On Wednesday, May 6, Oakdale will begin their quest to become the section champions. As the six seed, Oakdale will host 11 seed Del Campo at 4 p.m.
Oakdale finished the regular season on a two-game winning streak and finished in fourth place in the Valley Oak League with a league record of 11-7. Del Campo placed fifth in the Foothill Valley League with a record of 5-13.
Roseville is the number one seed in the 16-team D4 tournament. Others in the tournament are Oakmont, Vanden, Bradshaw Christian, Nevada Union, East Union, Center, Placer, Roseville, Twelve Bridges, Pioneer, Central Catholic, Beyer and Los Banos. Should the Mustangs be victorious and advance, their next challenge would be held on May 8 at 4 p.m. where they would play the winner of the No. 3 Placer/No. 14 Roseville game. The championship is scheduled for May 23 at 1 p.m.
TRACK/FIELD
In a very successful competition, the varsity Oakdale Lady Mustangs track and field team took first place while the varsity boys were second at the Valley Oak League championship meet. It was hosted Thursday, April 30 at Manteca High School.
The varsity girls were first with 159 points; second place Sierra had 121. The varsity boys took second with 112 points, finishing behind first place Sierra, which had 123.
The JV girls were champions with 213 points; second place Mountain House had 112 and the JV boys were champions as well, scoring 127 points on the day; second place Sierra had 77.
“It was a great VOL finals for our track team. The hard work of the season showed up at the finals,” said head coach Dave Bacigalupi.
For the varsity girls, Kylie Fast was third in the 800; Addison Wylie was second in the 1600, third in the 3200. Also, Danika Savage, first, 100 hurdles, third, 300 hurdles; Gianna Carroll, second, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles. Ellie Constant, second, triple jump; Natalie Powell, second, discus; Audrey Clark, third, high jump; Aubrey Sibley, third, pole vault.
The 4-by-100 relay team of Payton Wilson, Tammy Huang, Gianna Carroll and Skyler Burford was third. The 4-by-400 team of Skyler Burford, Kinsley Alves, Jordan Wylie and Willa Speer was third and the 4-by-800 team took first place, featuring Kylie Fast, Tenley Wylie, Addison Wylie and Jordan Wylie.
For the varsity boys, Weston McGhee was second in the 1600 and Sean Muturi was third; it was a Mustang sweep in the 3200 with Muturi first, McGhee second and Aden Cavanaugh third. Quinn Baca was fourth and Roman Moreno fifth for the Mustangs.
In the hurdles, Wes Burford placed second in both the 110 and 300 events.
Eri Rubio was first in discus, second in shot put.
The Mustangs went 1-2 in the pole vault, with Grant Gardner first and Caden Adams second; Luke Kirkpatrick was second in the long jump.
The D-3 trials are scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 in Manteca with the finals on Saturday, May 16 at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.
BOYS GOLF
On April 23, the Mustang golf boys played in the fifth VOL Tournament at the par 71 La Contenta Golf Course in Valley Springs. Oakdale captured their fifth straight VOL tournament with a score of 393, with Central Catholic a distant second at 428.
“Junior Estuardo Duque shot an even par 71 to take home medalist, low score of the day, honors,” explained head coach Jeremy Fields. “Fellow juniors Julian Velazquez (78), Fred Herschbach (79), Brody Boysen (84), Easton Thalman (81), and freshman Nik Nalder (85) rounded out the scoring for Oakdale.”
On April 28, the VOL Championship tournament was played at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi, a par 72.
Carding the team low 392, Oakdale was crowned VOL champions.
“The Oakdale Mustangs finished the VOL season undefeated and won the league championship for the eighth straight season,” Fields said.
Duque led the Mustangs with a 2 under par 70, earning medalist honors and he won all six league tournaments this year to earn the VOL MVP award for the third straight season.
“Strong efforts from other Mustangs included Julian Velazquez (75), Brody Boysen (77), Fred Herschbach (83), Nik Nalder (87), Easton Thalman (91),” Fields added.
Velazquez finished second overall in the VOL Championships, Boysen tied for third, Herschbach ninth, Nalder tied for 13th and Thalman tied for 19th in the 42-player field.
“For the overall season, Duque (MVP) and Velazquez, Herschbach, and Boysen all earned first-team honors in the VOL,” said Fields.
