Saturday, May 9 will feature the annual commemoration of the Irish Hunger Memorial, to be staged at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, sponsored by the 26 Mile House Historical Society.
The event is open to the public and a guest speaker from the Irish Consulate of San Francisco is expected to attend. The formal ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and this year marks the tenth anniversary of the local memorial observance. The cemetery is at 6745 E. Sonora Road, located in the rural area between Oakdale and Farmington, near Eugene.
Special music is being planned as well, with the local Brennan’s Parlor group slated to perform prior to the ceremony, which remembers the victims of the Irish famine and honors those who fled from that country and settled here.
