Tennis, Volleyball Girls Close Out League Competition

The Valley Oak League season has ended for the Oakdale girls tennis team and will come to a close for the Oakdale volleyball club tonight. Both teams have had a successful regular season and are gearing up for playoffs.

 

TENNIS

Oakdale’s Lady Mustangs tennis team completed the 2016 season with an 11-2 record and were winners of five straight. The team’s regular season finale came against Central Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the S.O.S. Club in Modesto. Oakdale’s Tay Talamentes completed the league sweep with a victory over Alyssa McPhee 6-0, 6-1. On the year Talamentes went 13-0 in league play and was awarded the top seed in the 2016 Valley Oak League singles tournament held in Manteca. The tournament was held on Tuesday, Oct. 25 following The Leader press time. Oakdale’s doubles will be held at Manteca on Thursday, Oct. 27. Tournament play will begin at 9 a.m.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Oakdale improved to 11-1 in Valley Oak League action following a pair of victories this past week. On Monday, Oct. 19 the team went on the road and knocked off East Union in three sets. Oakdale won 25-17, 25-18, 25-20. Leading the way in kills was Makkena Ryan with six. Abigail Matoso added five and Samantha Nickerson contributed with four. Nickerson also came away with a team leading two blocks for Oakdale. Isabella Cobarruvias led the team in assists with 17, while Jocelyn Burke served up five aces and Marisela Nichols added 18 digs. Oakdale hosted Weston Ranch on Wednesday, Oct. 19 and also made short work of the visitors for their latest win. On Monday, Oct. 24 the Lady Mustangs went to Central Catholic to take on the Raiders following The Leader’s press time. Tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 26 will be Oakdale’s Senior Night 2016, with pregame festivities scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Prior to the varsity girls win on Oct. 19, the junior varsity girls won in straight sets 25-10, 25-20 over Weston Ranch. The freshman team also won 25-10, 23-25, 15-8 in three sets over Weston Ranch on Wednesday night. The junior varsity and freshman girls will host Central Catholic tonight, Oct. 26 beginning with the freshman contest at 4 p.m.
