With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Paul Zakel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Paul left this world on January 6, 2026, at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with cancer. He left behind a legacy of strength, courage, and dedication that touched many lives.
Paul was born on March 28, 1947, in Oakdale, California, to his loving parents, Paul and Alvina Zakel. He was the second of three children and grew up in a home filled with good times, laughter, and a strong sense of community. Paul was predeceased by his parents and his brother Byron Laurence. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Patty, his children Annette Zakel-Arnett (Marty) and Jim Zakel (Erin), his granddaughter Ashley Arnett (Arthur), and his brother Steve Zakel.
Paul married the love of his life, Patricia Perryman, on April 3, 1966, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oakdale. Together they raised two wonderful children in a home that centered around family, unforgettable memories, and countless good times. One of his greatest joys was cheering from the sidelines at his granddaughter Ashley’s soccer games. He was her biggest fan, celebrating every goal, every effort, and every moment they spent together. She truly was the light of his life.
A proud alumnus of Oakdale High School, Paul graduated in 1965, where he shone as a star pitcher on the baseball team, setting a strike-out record that remains unbroken to this day. His prowess on the field garnered interest from several professional teams, but he chose to embark on an apprenticeship with PG&E as a lineman. His 35-year career was marked by dedication and bravery, exemplified when he received the John Britton Award in 1986 for attempting to save the life of a fellow worker. He retired as an esteemed electrical line foreman in 2007.
Paul was a man of many passions and interests. An avid sports enthusiast, he shared his love for athletics as an OBA coach and umpire, where he had the privilege of coaching his son, Jim. He took immense pride in watching Jim grow into an outstanding soccer goalkeeper and later celebrated as he went on to become a Division 1 soccer coach. Paul was an avid Sacramento Kings and Oakland Athletics supporter and he thoroughly enjoyed football games at The Corral in Oakdale, until he physically could no longer attend.
Paul’s green thumb was evident in his beautiful garden, where he spent countless hours cultivating and sharing its bounty with family, friends, and local senior assisted-care facilities.
After his retirement, he discovered a true passion for fishing, always searching for the perfect lure and eagerly learning everything he could about the sport. His fishing buddy was his son-in-law Marty, and together they shared countless hours on the water chasing the next big one. They shared a friendship that meant the world to him.
Together, Paul and Patty, along with their daughter Annette, built an extremely successful horse business. Through their commitment, hard work, and shared vision, they bred, raised, and showed multiple AQHA and APHA World and Reserve World Champions, creating a legacy of excellence that reflected their passion.
Paul’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His gift of storytelling was infectious, and he could always be counted on for a tale that would bring a smile or a hearty laugh. His legacy of love and loyalty will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to share in his journey.
A private memorial service will be held to honor Paul’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local animal shelter or youth sports program, causes that were close to Paul’s heart.
