Tennis Girls Drop Two VOL Matches

It might have been a rough week for the Lady Mustang tennis team, but their spirits were high during the week, and they are looking to get back on the winning track with upcoming VOL contests. DENNIS D. CRUZ/THE LEADER

Oakdale’s tennis team dropped a pair of Valley Oak League matches this past week.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 Oakdale fell to Sierra 9-0 and then at home to Central Catholic 8-1 on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Tavin Barry’s matchup against Sierra’s Melanie Nguyen was considered the match of the day in the Sept. 19 contest. Barry fell in the first set 7-6 and then lost 6-3. Lijian Bacud failed to score a point in the contest as she fell 0-6, 0-6. Tayla Barry lost 0-6, 3-6. Mackenzie Brown tried to hold her own in singles action but lost 4-6, 1-6. Breanna Morgan also put forth a valiant effort but would fall 4-6, 3-6. Shannen Yang also was defeated 0-6, 2-6. All three doubles teams were also defeated.

Thursday, Yang turned things around in singles action winning the lone match of the week for Oakdale 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the tiebreaker.

On Saturday, the team held a novice tournament with teams in the Valley Oak League participating. Angie Lowery took first place and Jessica Jericoff placed second in singles action. In doubles Nicole Brunker and Olivia Doshas placed second.

Returning to Valley Oak League action, Oakdale traveled to Manteca on Tuesday, Sept. 26 following The Leader’s press time. On Thursday, Sept. 28 the girls return home to face Weston Ranch.

Oakdale is now 4-2 in league play. All matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
