Oakdale’s boys tennis season came to a close for the team on Thursday, April 21 following the Valley Oak League Doubles Tournament.

On Tuesday, April 19 three Oakdale singles took the home court for the VOL Singles tournament. Devin Odom, Zack Miller and Spencer Keyser represented the Mustangs in the eight-team tournament.

Odom defeated East Union’s Kyle Niendorf, 8-3. Odom’s season came to a close in round two after being blanked 8-0 by Garrett Chun of Kimball, who went on to win the championship and was named league MVP.

Like his teammate Odom, Keyser started the tournament on a high note with a first round victory over Laic Beugre of Sierra, 8-2. Keyser could not keep up his momentum in the second round as he fell to Sam Nicholson of Central Catholic. Miller fell in an extra set after tying 7-7 with Kyle Banks of Sierra.

Two days later the doubles took the court where Oakdale had three teams set for action. Keyser and Odom paired together for the Mustangs. Daniel Davis and Daniel Lubeck represented Oakdale’s second team and the duo of Jacob Pierson and Tyler Ross made Oakdale’s third team.

It turned out to be a short afternoon for all three teams as Pierson and Ross fell 8-6 in the first, Davis and Lubeck got doubled up 8-4 and Keyser and Odom also fell short 9-7.

“The tournaments were not what we were hoping for. We did not do well. Our team was built on depth not studs at the top,” coach Grant Miller said. “I am proud of the boys for staying alive in the playoff hunt all the way into the last week of the season. They fought like champs.”
