The 2017 boys tennis season came to a close for Oakdale in the Valley Oak League singles and doubles tournaments this past week. On Tuesday, April 25 Oakdale sent their singles competitors to Sierra High School for tournament play. Oakdale had a rough outing in the tournament where the boys went winless.

On Thursday, Oakdale’s luck took a turn for the better in the doubles tournament at Sierra. Oakdale’s top team of Zack Miller and Daniel Lubeck placed third in the tournament making the First Team All-VOL selections. On the day Oakdale defeated Kimball 10-8. Down 0-4 in the second set, Oakdale won six straight games to seal the victory.

“It was one of the longest tie breakers I have seen in years,” Oakdale coach Grant Miller said.

Oakdale’s number two team of Angel Padilla and C.J. Toledo won six straight games and the tie breaker to defeat Kimball in the first round. The duo fell to Weston Ranch the next round. The Mustangs number three team of Jaylen Fogleman and Clay Verdegaal defeated Weston Ranch 8-1 to start the tournament off in the right direction. Fogleman and Verdegaal’s run came to an end in the second round against Kimball.

“This tournament was stacked. It was a great tournament and I cannot say enough about how proud I am of these young men,” Miller said. “They put in a lot of time and effort, and it is nice to see the good guys win one.”
