As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, Oakdales volleyball clubs all showed their support for the cause. Wearing shirts with the message Just Cure It along with pink socks, hair ties and shoelaces, the girls and coaching staff displayed their passion for the cause.

As the calendar turns and the leaves fall from the trees, the Oakdale Lady Mustangs push through the competition this fall. Oakdale’s volleyball, girls tennis and girls golf teams were in action recently and pieced together a successful week.

VOLLEYBALL

Oakdale varsity volleyball has continued to shine under first year head coach Heather Gonzales. The Lady Mustangs are now 4-0 in league play after defeating East Union in three sets 25-19, 25-12 25-23. Lauren Ott led the team in kills with 16. Ott and teammates Isabella Cobarruvias and Jodie Whitley also led the team with one ace as well. Cobarruvias was tops on the team with 20 blocks, while Savannah Rodgers added 19 digs. Oakdale hosted Weston Ranch on Tuesday, Oct. 6 after The Leader’s press time. Oakdale travels to take on Central Catholic on Thursday, Oct. 8. Oakdale’s junior varsity and freshman teams also claimed victory over East Union, as the younger girls both won in straight sets.

GIRLS TENNIS

The rain washed away the team’s match against East Union, but the girls took on Kimball on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in Tracy. Oakdale doubled up the Lady Jags 6-3 to get a tough road win. Carley Newbill, Courtney Rodgers, Alyssa Gouveia and Maddie Brewer all claimed victory in singles competition. Two of the three Lady Mustang doubles also were victorious as McKayla Johnson and Amy Schneck won in three sets, and Breanna Morgan and Kendall Kiely were also winners in three sets. Oakdale hosted Lathrop on Tuesday, Oct. 6 after The Leader went to press. The Lady Mustangs will take the court again on a pair of road games against Sierra and Central Catholic this week.

GIRLS GOLF

Freshman Taylor Stewart is making the most of her first year, as the young Lady Mustang turned in a team low 43 on Thursday, Oct. 1 against Kimball at Tracy Golf and Country Club. Oakdale fell to Kimball by three strokes 263-266. In the season opener, Oakdale was defeated by Kimball 253-278. Bronte Lucero (51), Emily Greenwood (53), Milan Latanzio (56), and Bailey Zuk (63) rounded out the Lady Mustangs scorecard. Oakdale will pack up their clubs and hit the road this week as the girls take on Manteca and Lathrop.

WATER POLO

The Freshmen/Sophomore teams were on the road this weekend, having the girls go 2-2 in the Oakdale Frosh/Soph Tournament. A pool pump malfunction forced Oakdale to travel to Enochs High School to host the tournament. The Frosh/Soph boys also hit the pool at the Buhach Colony tournament. Oakdale went 1-3. The varsity clubs return to the pool in Ripon today, Wednesday, Oct. 7.
