Rumors that Walmart has withdrawn from its planned Oakdale project are false, according to City Manager Jerry Ramar.
Ramar confirmed this week that representatives for the project recently sought and received approval from the Oakdale Planning Commission for a variance allowing larger building signage than currently permitted under municipal code.
“Kimley Horn (Walmart) applied for a variance to their sign,” Ramar said in an email. “They wanted the planning commission to approve a larger sign on their building than the municipal code allows. This application was for the front sign and side sign. The planning commission approved the variance.”
The approval is the latest indication that the project remains active despite ongoing speculation that Walmart was reconsidering its plans for Oakdale.
“Yes, I am aware of the rumor mill,” Ramar said when asked about reports that Walmart was backing out. “It is false.”
He added that Walmart’s original projected opening date was early 2028, but the timeline has since accelerated.
“Now they are projected to open in late 2027,” Ramar said. “They are not backing out.”
The new Walmart is planned for the former Kmart building on South Maag Avenue, a long-vacant site that has drawn community concern because of vandalism, trespassing and vagrant activity. The redevelopment of the property has been closely watched by residents eager to see the site returned to productive use.
