One man died at the scene and another succumbed to his injuries at a hospital following a three-vehicle crash on Ladd Road on Saturday night, June 27.
According to the California Highway Patrol, they received a call just after 9:35 p.m. Saturday of a crash on Ladd Road east of Tully Road in Modesto.
“Upon their arrival, CHP officers located a three-vehicle crash, with one vehicle engulfed in flames, blocking the roadway of Ladd Road,” Modesto CHP Information Officer Aaron Fay noted in a press release.
The driver of a 2026 Porsche coupe, a 57-year-old man from Modesto, was pronounced deceased at the scene. As of Tuesday afternoon, June 30, his identity had not yet been released, according to a spokesperson at the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities did say the right front passenger in the Porsche, identified as Jon Burgess, 38, of Manteca, sustained major injuries and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center. He later died of his injuries.
The CHP report indicates both occupants of the Porsche were wearing their seatbelts.
Two Oakdale residents sustained major injuries in the crash. They were identified as Diana Ybarra, 52, who was driving a 2023 Mercedes SUV, and the right front passenger, identified as Manuel Ybarra, 53, of Oakdale. Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and both were transported to local hospitals with major injuries.
A 2016 Ram pick up truck was also involved, driven by Ismael Gonzalez, 27, of Manteca. Authorities said he had minor injuries. There were five other passengers in the truck, all females, including a 42-year-old, a 26-year-old, a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old and a two-year-old.
“All occupants were properly restrained within the Ram,” the CHP report noted. “All occupants of the Ram sustained either no injuries or minor injuries.”
The preliminary CHP report indicates that the Porsche was traveling westbound on Ladd Road, at a high rate of speed, approaching the rear of the Ram truck, which was also traveling westbound on Ladd Road. The Mercedes was traveling eastbound on Ladd Road, approaching the Ram and Porsche.
The front of the Porsche collided into the rear of the Ram, causing the truck to continue out of control, off the roadway to the north, where it subsequently overturned. The Porsche continued in a southwesterly direction, into the eastbound lane, where it collided head on with the Mercedes. Shortly thereafter, the Porsche became engulfed in flames, blocking the roadway.
Authorities said the roadway remained closed for approximately two-and-a-half hours while officers conducted the on-scene investigation.
Based on that preliminary investigation, CHP officials said, it is believed that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
