Oakdale’s softball team won their home opener 7-3 over visiting Gregori on Tuesday, March 1. The girls used a five-run third inning to pull away from the Jaguars.
The Lady Mustangs were led by freshman pitcher Lexi Webb who pitched a complete game, and senior Haley Fuller’s two RBI day at the plate.
With the Lady Mustangs down 1-0 in the third, Oakdale’s bats came alive. Shay Trent, who went 1-for-3, got things rolling for Oakdale with a lead off single; it was Oakdale’s first hit since the first inning. Three batters later, Oakdale had the bases loaded with one out. Webb showed she can not only dominate in the circle but carries a heavy bat as well. The freshman hit a two-RBI double to give Oakdale a 2-1 advantage. Webb went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Oakdale doubled their advantage on a Fuller one out two-RBI double of her own to make it 4-1. Fuller finished the day 1-for-3 on the day. Emily Greenwood tacked on Oakdale’s fifth run of the inning when she hit a line drive down the third base line to score Fuller from second. Greenwood reached base three times in the game, as she reached on an error, and was walked her other two at bats.
“It was amazing. I did not know I was starting or even thought I was going to throw a complete game. It was a dream come true, I have thought about pitching on this field for a long time,” said Webb, who struck out 10 Jaguar batters.
