Local Man Awarded Unusual Honor
Placeholder Image
Have you ever wondered what it's like to backpack into the high country with nothing more than a pack mule, a compass, and a good sense of direction? Jay Barnes, a man with deep roots in local soil, knows a few things about that and can tell a few stories about growing up on the Mather Saddle and Pack Station in Groveland where his family has operated the station for 82 years. Barnes was recently named Most Honored Packer for the Bishop Mule Days. For more about this man and his family's unusual occupation, don't miss the B-1 section of the May 18 issue of The Oakdale Leader.
