Homecoming Week festivities wrapped up successfully on Friday, Oct. 18 when the Oakdale High School Mustangs beat Sierra High School at the OHS Corral by a 24-17 final in Friday night football. The satisfying win (See story, photos in Sports, Page B1) capped a busy week that also saw a repeat Powder Puff victory by the Class of 2014 (Page B2) and the crowning of new royalty in the Homecoming Court.
With the theme of “Superheroes” for this year, each of the classes painted the windows of a downtown business and participated in various dress-up days and on-campus lunchtime activities throughout the week leading up to a rally and parade just prior to Friday’s game.
Clad in the appropriate costumes, members of each OHS class and a couple of campus clubs participated in the annual Homecoming Parade through downtown Oakdale near the end of the school day on Oct. 18. With the Mortimer the Mustang mascot riding shotgun in an Oakdale Police Department squad car to lead the way, Grand Marshal and OHS Principal’s Secretary Jan Alstad was chauffeured in a golf cart, giving her best parade wave to the crowd, followed by the OHS marching band and colorguard. Next came the class floats, walking groups, and this year’s Homecoming queen, king, princess, and prince candidates who sat atop convertibles and waved to onlookers.
Assistance from OPD and the Oakdale Fire Department helped the event come together to briefly reroute downtown traffic while the floats, cars, and marchers made their way along the parade route.
The Homecoming King and Prince were crowned during halftime of the Powder Puff game on Wednesday, Oct. 16 with sophomore Lane Trapp and senior Tanner Morgan taking home the prince and king crowns, respectively.
Halftime of the Friday night game saw the Queen and Princess candidates escorted to midfield, with senior Viviana Aguilera chosen as Homecoming Queen and sophomore Lauren Ott selected as the Homecoming Princess. The varsity football team then guaranteed a happy crowd, coming back from a halftime deficit to win the league contest.
