Retired K-9 Officer “Shadow” passed away on Monday, May 20 according to his owner Beth Baker of Turlock.

Shadow served the Oakdale Police Department from 2005 to 2008 after being with the Tracy Police Department from 2001 to 2005.

After his retirement when he was nine-years-old, Shadow was sold to the Baker family for $1 in June 2008. A June 25, 2008 Leader news article shows each Baker child giving then Police Chief Marty West 50 cents for their new pet.

During his service with Oakdale PD, Shadow was a favorite at many community events and particularly liked being around kids and school events.

“He was such a great dog,” said Sergeant Brian Shimmel, Shadow’s first handler when the Labrador Retriever came to Oakdale. “A solid dope dog.”

In an email to the Oakdale Leader, Beth Baker said Shadow passed away peacefully in their yard under a tree.

“He was a great dog and we were blessed to have him in his retirement years,” Baker wrote.
