If you went to bed at night with your yard looking normal and woke with several plastic pink flamingos in your yard, then you have probably been ‘Flocked.’ Cindy Logan and her team have been ‘Flocking for a Cure’ for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
Logan and her team go out in the evening, and decorate yards with flamingos to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. So when the person that has been flocked awakens in the morning they will see an array of decorations in a small corner of their yard. There will be an envelope attached to the door with a note explaining why the flamingos are there and giving you an opportunity to donate. They also have a space on the form where you can ‘pay the flocking forward’ and choose to have them sent to a friend. All you need to do is list their address and when the flock of flamingos gets picked up, they will move them on to the yard of the friend listed on the form. The 2013 Flocking for a Cure fundraiser is in full effect and will be buzzing around the community for the next two months.
Last year the fundraiser goal for the team was to reach $1,000 by flocking the community of Oakdale and surrounding areas. They exceeded their goal and received many responses to the flocking. Logan expressed that people in the community started sharing their stories of friends and family who have fought cancer.
“It is for those people who didn’t give up as well as anyone who just couldn’t do it that I relay for,” said Logan.
For the past two years, Logan’s mother has been battling cancer and continues to fight daily. She expressed that she knows her mom is tired, but she gets in the car and continues treatment.
“I celebrate my mom, who is still fighting,” stated Logan.
Unfortunately, Logan’s younger sister lost her battle with cancer when she was 15 and was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. She passed six months after she was diagnosed.
“I have an FFA jacket, her favorite shirt and her love of flamingos to remember her by,” said Logan.
In the 100 block of Maxwell recently, neighbors received the colorful surprise of pink flamingos in their yards and have been passing them from house to house right down the street. Collen Luke was surprised to see the pink flamingos in her yard, but it brought a smile to her face.
“I think it’s awesome what they are doing, bringing awareness” said Luke. “I will be sending the flocking forward.”
If you would like to participate in Relay For Life 2013 the 24-hour event takes place at the Oakdale High School soccer fields starting on Saturday, April 27 at 8 a.m.
“Cancer doesn’t sleep and for this day, while we honor them and their fight, neither do we,” stated Logan.
