Wrestlers Pin Down Valley Oak League Crown

Wednesday night, Oakdale wrestlers completed a perfect campaign, the squads finished the Valley Oak League schedule with a win over Sonora in both JV and Varsity. Both teams finished 7-0 and claimed the VOL Championship.

 “Saturday both teams competed at Pitman High School in the 10th annual “Rumble in the Jungle” Invitational,” said head coach Steve Strange. “Thirty-nine teams competed. The varsity team won the tournament title, led by five individual champions and 10 place winners.”

Champions at the Rumble in the Jungle, receiving belts, were Cody Williams, 108 pounds; Nico Colunga, 122; Trevor Williams, 128; Tanner Reeves, 162 and Frankie Trent, 172.

Also placing for Oakdale were Logan Eaton, 115 pounds, second; Abel Garcia, 154, second; Wyatt Hjelm, 222, third; Justin Jacobson, 140, fourth; and Miguel Ibarra, 197, fourth place.

“The Junior Varsity team also had a successful day with several wrestlers earning championships,” Strange added.

First place finishers for the JV Mustangs were Carlos Lopez, 108; Ralphie Leyva, 115; Tyler Scott, 134; Zac Cordoza, 140; Eric Amador, 147; Sam Angarole, 148; Christian Johnson, 184; Erik Ruiz, 197.

Taking third place honors was Wyatt Dobbins, 222 pounds; with fourth place finishers for the JV including Julian De Los Rios, 122; Jordan Lee, 132; Salem Moore, 155 and Hunter Burford, 160 pounds.

“After a long month of traveling and competing against many of the best wrestlers around the state, our guys enjoyed a strong showing against local competition,” Strange explained. “The team is looking forward to the start of the postseason this weekend.”

The varsity squad will travel to the Section Dual Championships at Lincoln High in Stockton this Saturday, Feb. 8. Wrestling will start at 1:30 p.m.
