With the Aquatic Center at OHS out of commission for the time being, the varsity boys and girls water polo clubs hosted their home games against Central Catholic at the Oakdale Plunge (community pool) on Monday, Oct. 19. Both teams swam away from the competition as the girls took care of business first with a convincing 13-3 win, followed by a 17-5 victory for the boys.

Freshman Bethany Metcalfe got the girls off to a hot start as she scored five of the first seven Oakdale goals. Metcalfe scored a game high seven goals and added an assist for the Lady Mustangs. The varsity girls broke out to a 5-0 lead to end the first quarter. Metcalfe had an early hat trick, while Emily Bennett and Kate Allan each added first quarter goals. Oakdale found the net five more times in the second quarter to take a commanding 10-1 lead at the half. Metcalfe added three more goals and Mackenzie Phillips and Maya Guerrero each added a goal each in the second frame. A quiet third quarter resulted in just two goals in the period, both by Oakdale. Metcalfe and Marisa Thomas gave the Lady Mustangs a 12-1 lead heading into the fourth. Oakdale’s Jessika Lizama found the net for Oakdale with 1:44 left in the game to close out the contest. On Wednesday, Oct. 21 Oakdale followed up with an impressive 17-3 victory over Bret Harte to improve to 4-0 in league play. On Wednesday, Oct. 28 the team will host their Senior Night festivities before taking on Sonora.

The Mustang varsity boys powered their way through Central Catholic as Samuel Cole led the way with three goals in the team’s win. Oakdale took an 8-1 lead with them into the half thanks to a 5-1 first quarter. Corey Leach scored Oakdale’s first goal with 5:29 remaining in the first quarter. Wesley Ramar followed up with a goal of his own with 4:55 left in the first. Cole added back-to-back goals and Jared Kahler scored Oakdale’s final goal of the quarter with 17 seconds left. The Mustangs shut out the Raiders 3-0 in the second quarter with goals by Ramar, Noah Rodriguez and Casey Juliussen. After the break, Oakdale added five more goals in the third quarter to take 13-2 lead. Kahler scored the first followed by Nate Van Cleave, Cole, Jackson Metcalfe and Caden Nord. Oakdale’s high powered offense continued in the fourth as Kahler scored his third goal of the night with 4:16 left in the game. Van Cleave, Noah Gaynor and David Albertoni also found the back of the net. Wednesday night will also be Senior Night for the varsity boys.
