In his second season as head coach of the Oakdale High School varsity boys basketball team, Coach Hondo Arpoika won the first preseason game of the season with a road victory over Bret Harte 53-42 on Monday, Nov. 28. In the win Drew Legan scored a team high 21 points for the Mustangs. Legan connected on five first half three-pointers to set the tone of the game. Nick Woody added 13 points in the win. On Saturday, Dec. 3 the boys traveled to Escalon to take on the Cougars. In a hard fought game where the Mustangs poured in 20 first quarter points, they fell 45-41 in the non-league contest. Legan and Blake Whiting each scored a dozen for the Mustangs. The Mustangs then traveled to Atwater to take on the Buhach Colony Thunder on Tuesday, Dec. 6 following press time for The Leader. Oakdale will travel to Summerville in Tuolumne City on Thursday night, Dec. 8 with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oakdale returns home on Monday night, Dec. 12 when they welcome in Merced.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The junior varsity boys took a weekend trip to Escalon on Saturday where they came up short 46-35. The Mustangs kept it close in the first as they were down 23-15 at the half. Oakdale’s offense could not get a rhythm going when second half play got underway, as they only scored four points in the third quarter, watching the host Cougars slowly pull away. Jensen Mauchley scored a team high 10 points while Aron Camron added eight for Oakdale. According to Coach Don Muniz, Oakdale’s Sam Medlin pulled down seven rebounds in limited action for the Mustangs.

“Sam pulled down seven rebounds and played less than one half due to illness,” said Muniz.

The coach also praised Luis Medrano for his efforts in the game.

“I would give Luis the ‘Best Hustler’ on the court award. He played an outstanding all-around game, especially on the defensive end,” Muniz said.

Oakdale took on Summerville on Tuesday night, Dec. 6 following press time. The JV team travels to Summerville on Thursday night and will host Atwater on Monday night, Dec. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

Oakdale’s freshman boys took the court on Saturday against Escalon and earned a 47-32 road win over the host Cougars. Michael Echevarria led the team with 18 points, seven assists and seven steals. Riley Miller pulled down a team high nine rebounds.
