Oakdale swimmers cruised to a combined top finish at the league tournament while track stars shined in Sacramento and tennis players qualified for the postseason in an active Spring Break week for Mustang athletes. Following are recaps of the recent action.
Oakdale’s boys finished first at the Valley Oak League championships at East Union on Saturday, and watched the girls take second for a combined team score of 236 points between the two divisions.
Sierra won the girls title, but landed 205 points to finish second to Oakdale in overall marks.
Oakdale won every relay event, and saw Hank Walter, Will Cavanaugh, Brandon Terwilliger and Casey Whitley speed to top honors in the 200 yard medley relay. Whitley, Terwilliger, Walter and Braden Lee also took the 200 free relay while Terwilliger, Lee, Walter and Ryan Jones won the 400 free relay.

The girls watched Stevie Cordoza, Alissa Burford, Katie Vanderburg, and Ali Poff take a title in the 200 medley relay, while Cordoza, Poff, Vanderburg and Kelsey Knollmueller won both the 200 free and 400 free relays.

Oakdale’s top girls will take on the Sac-Joaquin Section Trials on May 12, with boys trials to follow the following day and section finals for both on May 14. All events will take place at Tokay High.
Marco Camacho, Daniel Linder, Domi Powell and Jaylene Ponce reached the finals of their respective events on April 30 to land top-10 placements at one of the state’s toughest track and field tournaments every year, the Sacramento Meet Of Champions at Sacramento City College.
Camacho hurled a discus over 163 feet to land sixth in the men’s discus division and took third among boys shot putters with another throw over 50 feet.
Linder was fifth among all boys long jumpers while Powell took third in the girls high jump event. Ponce made a good toss to finish 10th among all girls shot putters as well.
Oakdale track stars will take on the Valley Oak League Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 7 at Sierra High.
The Mustangs will battle in the Division III Championships at Modesto Junior College on May 17 and 19.
A back and forth season on the varsity tennis court swung Daniel Dunning and Anton Grenvall’s way on Thursday at the league doubles championship tournament.
The two singles standouts paired up for a quality shot at the postseason and ultimately finished second to Xanee Lopez and Alex Barragen of Manteca in the championship match.
The two were down 0-5 in the final match, but fought back to force a tiebreaker and 5-7 (3-6) ultimate decision.
The pair will take on the Division II individual playoff bracket on Thursday, May 5, at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
