Whether it’s Valley Oak League competition or non-league tournament play, Oakdale High athletes have been sharp so far in fall season competition for the red and gold. Following are brief recaps for some of the fall sports going on right now.
Soccer
Oakdale beat Sonora in a convincing 4-0 decision on Friday, after spreading the wealth to four goal scorers. Oskar Nilsson, Marcos Casillas, Mark Ortiz and Davies Harper chipped in one goal each while Harper, Antonio Munoz and Robert Gilbert (two assists) made passes resulting in a score. Scott McNeill stopped four shots on goal in the shut out.
Oakdale dropped a 3-2 loss to Livingston on Saturday. Nilsson and Munoz each scored while McNeill nabbed a lone assist and Sam Paboojian saved five would-be goals.
Oakdale hosts Kimball today in the first under-the-lights soccer game in school history. There will be a dedication ceremony prior to the varsity game. JV kicks off the action at 5 p.m., with the dedication at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
Golf
Oakdale was undefeated in Valley Oak League action as of Monday, setting up Tuesday’s highly anticipated showdown with fellow unbeaten squad East Union, though results were not available at press time.
Oakdale ousted Sierra in a 295-363 score on Sept. 7 and saw a postponement of their contest with Lathrop on Sept. 8.
The team fell in 255-271 fashion to Division IV stalwart, Escalon, at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club on Thursday in a non-league match. Oakdale serves as the home course for both teams.
Jaylene Ponce grabbed medalist honor with a 43-stroke performance while Julie Bolme nabbed a career low 46. Michelle DesRochers carded a 54 while Nikki Stastny shot a 61 and Frankie Taylor a 67.
“I think we are doing really well right now,” Oakdale coach Lee McGhee said. “We are improving each week and the girls are seeing better and better scores.”
Water Polo
Oakdale’s frosh-soph girls came away from tournament action at Johansen High in Modesto with a five game win stanza and championship honors.
The team opened with a 10-3 rout of Beyer after eight Cassie Lee goals and five big saves from Haley Benson. Vikki Swarthout added two scores in the win, and watched the team play to a 9-0 shutout of Beyer in their second contest.
Swarthout added two more goals in that game, while Lee scored four and Katy Gotlieb and Kendyl Burford chipped in one each.
Oakdale ousted Lincoln on an 8-5 score after six Lee goals and one apiece by Burford and Lauren Travers.
The team beat Merced handily in a 9-1 tally after six Lee scores, two from Katie Vanderberg and one by Burford. Hayley Benson added 11 saves to stop the previously unbeaten Bears.
Oakdale won championship honors with a 6-2 victory over Sonora. Lee scored four times while Megan Tacket and Swarthout added one goal each.
The frosh-soph girls are coached by Christine Zador.
Tennis
Oakdale bounced back from an 11.5-3.5 loss to Sierra with a 14-1 thumping of Lathrop on Thursday.
Elise Derby defeated Merchelle Alegado 6-2, Michaela Pauly 6-0 and Shauna Hinson 6-3. Emily Clayton chipped in a 7-6 (7-5) win over Pauly before a 6-0 win over Hinson and 0-6 loss to Alegado. Lindsay Dunn went 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 against the trio to win all her matches.
In doubles play, Laurie Baxter and Katie Odom defeated Lisa Lee and Sonum Kaur 10-1 before upending Melinda Pauly and Cruz Hernandez 10-1. Emily Johnson and Kalkidan Curtis beat the two pairs in 10-2 scores as well.
Oakdale’s loss to Sierra came after just one singles win apiece from Derby and Dunn, and a lone doubles victory by Laurie Baxter and Katie Odom.
Oakdale hosts Kimball on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
