Mustang Wrestlers Battle During Busy Travel Week

Coming off their impressive East Coast trip, Oakdale wrestlers made short work of Central Catholic on Wednesday night, Jan. 4. The 61-18 Mustang victory secured Oakdale’s first Valley Oak League dual win of the season. Over the weekend Oakdale sent six wrestlers to Clovis to compete in the Doc Buchanan Invite. When the dust settled in that two-day tournament, three Mustangs took the podium. Colbey Harlan, Abel Garcia and Ricky Torres all took honors at the tournament.

As a team Oakdale scored 66.5 points and placed 14th overall. Fresh off his fifth place finish at the Powerade in Pennsylvania; Harlan went 4-1 over the weekend to place second. Harlan, who competes in 182 pound weight class, advanced to the finals where he lost to the top seeded wrestler in the bracket.

Garcia, who wrestles at 170 pounds, went 4-2 overall and placed third. He advanced to the semifinals where he was defeated by the top ranked 170 pounder from Palm Desert. Garcia won 9-3 in the consolation bracket to place third in the tournament.

Sophomore Torres placed eighth in the tournament. Torres went 4-3 in the competitive 132-pound weight class.

Others who made the trip were 113-pounder Dustin Chavez (3-2), Gabe Martinez (152 pounds, 0-2), and Bronson Harmon (160 pounds, 1-1).

The Mustangs also competed in the Lloyd Engel in Escalon over the weekend. Taking first place were Ronnie Ochoa at 138 pounds and Luis Ayala at 195 pounds. Ayala was named Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler for the tournament. Cody Golding took second in the 160-pound weight class.

Tonight, the wrestlers head to Sierra to take on Kimball and Sierra in a VOL dual meet. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. This weekend Oakdale will travel to Sacramento for the Tim Brown Memorial. On Wednesday, Jan. 18 Oakdale will host Lathrop and Manteca for a VOL Dual. Wrestling is scheduled for 4 p.m. inside the main gym.
