School is back in session, fall is almost upon us and many of the OHS Mustangs teams are gearing up for the 2015 season. Oakdale’s football, volleyball, cross country, tennis and soccer teams were all involved in scrimmages and tournament play this past week.

Oakdale football traveled to Tracy High School to take on the Bulldogs in a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams buckled their chinstraps and went to work. Scrimmages can prove beneficial for players and coaches alike, the players getting the chance to go ‘game speed’ against an actual opponent instead of teammates, and coaches get a good look at where players might fit in the offensive and defensive schemes. This Friday night, Aug. 28 the defending CIF Sac Joaquin Section champion Mustangs welcome longtime rival the Sonora Wildcats to The Corral for the team’s season opener. Kick off for the varsity game is 7 p.m., following conclusion of the JV game, which begins at 5 p.m. Freshmen will be at Sonora for a game Thursday, with a 6 p.m. start.

Another group of section champs took the field in scrimmage play, as the varsity soccer boys hit the road in a pair of scrimmages this week. Monday, Aug. 24 and Tuesday, Aug. 25 the Mustangs took on Enochs and Beyer in pair of tune up games. Oakdale continues to play on the road when they will do battle in the Pitman tournament set for Friday and Saturday this week. Oakdale then comes home for some preseason action, hosting Franklin and Livingston on Sept. 1 and 3, respectively.

The new era in varsity volleyball got under way as new head coach Heather Gonzalez and the girls had a busy week. The team traveled to Beyer High School in Modesto to participate in a Round Robin scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22. The team also hosted a scrimmage against Hughson on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Tuesday, Sept.1 Oakdale squads will host Enochs in the season opener.

Off and running are the boys and girls of the cross country team. Oakdale held its Red/Gold Fox Trot scrimmage where the team ran one mile in a time trial. No times were released as it was listed as a scrimmage. Oakdale will travel to Ceres to take on Ceres and Central Valley on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Oakdale’s tennis girls look to make quite the racket this season. The team took on Enochs in a scrimmage on Tuesday and will hit the court again Wednesday and Friday, both times on the road. Wednesday, the girls take on Turlock in a scrimmage before taking on Downey on Friday. Tuesday, Sept. 1 the girls begin league play on the road against Weston Ranch.

Girls golf has a pair of scrimmages Wednesday and Thursday, both at home, hosting Gregori on Aug. 26 and Downey on Aug. 27, both at 3 p.m.

Water Polo girls will be in the pool on Saturday, Aug. 29 at home for a scrimmage.
