Lady Mustangs Continue Season Of Dominance

The Oakdale Lady Mustangs have continued to make strides during the fall as the tennis, golf and volleyball clubs all earned wins this past week. Following is a recap of the action in Valley Oak League play.

 

GIRLS GOLF

The girls golf team appears to be unstoppable. The varsity Lady Mustangs improved to an 11-0 record following this week’s wins over Weston Ranch and Manteca. Oakdale defeated Weston Ranch 227-351 on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Oakdale was led by Andrea York who shot 43 on the par 36 course at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Taylor Stewart (44), Maddi Blanc (45) Makayla Christiansen (46) and Allie Denning (49) rounded out the afternoon. The next day, Oakdale hosted Manteca in a Valley Oak League showdown. Oakdale defended their unbeaten streak with a convincing 208-278 victory. Stewart finished the day at the top of leaderboard, one stoke over par with a 37 through nine holes and leading a strong team effort that provided for the 70-stroke victory. Blanc and Christiansen (42 each), Denning (43) and York (44) rounded out the Oakdale efforts. The Lady Mustangs hosted Sierra and traveled to Kimball on Monday and Tuesday, following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale wraps up the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Modesto’s Dryden Park Golf Course against Central Catholic. The VOL tournament is set for Monday, Oct. 19. A location and time have yet to be determined.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

In tennis action the girls hit the road for a pair of Valley Oak League contests. On Sept. 27 the girls took a tough loss to Manteca. Oakdale lost 8-1 with Tay Talamentes earning the only win for Oakdale 6-3, 6-3. Two days later the girls regrouped for an impressive 9-0 road win over Weston Ranch. Talamentes and the rest of the singles won in straight sets. Carley Newbill (6-1, 6-1), Danika Brown (6-3, 6-1), Haley Takaki (6-2, 6-3), Maddie Brewer (7-6, 6-4) and Kendall Kiely (6-3, 6-4) all came home winners for Oakdale in singles competition. Oakdale’s doubles also earned three wins, all in straight sets as well. The tandems of Taryn Lane/Shannon Yang (6-2, 6-3), McKenzie Brown/Lijian Bacud (6-1, 6-4) and Breanna Morgan/Tayla Barry (6-2, 6-3) were all victorious for Oakdale. The girls hosted Kimball on Tuesday, Oct. 4 after The Leader went to press. Next up for the ladies is a home set against East Union on Thursday, Oct. 6. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Oakdale varsity volleyball girls won a pair of VOL games this past week with a 3-0 win over Weston Ranch and a 3-1 win over Central Catholic. On Monday, Sept. 26 the girls traveled to Stockton to play the Cougars and won 25-6, 25-18, 25-9. Isabella Cobarruvias helped lead the way with 30 assists and five aces. Marisella Nichols added 11 digs, while Makkena Ryan delivered 11 kills. Samantha Nickerson dominated the defensive side with two blocks in the win. Two days later the girls returned home for the four set victory over Central Catholic, 25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20. Ryan led the team in kills with 13, and also had four aces. Nickerson added eight kills of her own, and had six aces in the win. Jodie Whitley contributed with eight kills and Nichols added 32 digs to lead the team. Cobarruvias had two blocks and 29 assists. Oakdale was slated to travel to Lathrop to play the Spartans on Monday night, Oct. 3 following The Leader’s press time. The girls return to the home court on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
