There are several goals that a coach sets when opening the first weeks of a high school baseball season, but finishing without a loss usually is not on anyone’s checklist.
Yet that is exactly how things turned out for the Valley Oak League’s most dominant junior varsity baseball team. Oakdale High finished off an amazing run with an 11-1 mercy-shortened victory over the Sonora Wildcats to clinch an undefeated VOL championship season.
Oakdale reeled off an impressive 28-0 record on the season while closing out VOL action with a perfect 15-0 mark. Oakdale had no interest in spoiling the perfect season, outscoring the Wildcats 22-3 over the final two league contests.
Oakdale starter Brennon Williams closed off the season holding Sonora to just two hits over five innings of work, while teammates Zach Abbott and Jake Martinez provided Williams with all the run support he’d need.
Abbott and Martinez both drove in a pair of runs, helping Williams out in Oakdale’s May 5 win over the Wildcats.
Sonora had no idea what to expect when the undefeated Mustangs headed up the hill, but they got a quick lesson as Oakdale handed Sonora one of its more lopsided defeats of the season.
Matt Butler handled the bulk of the pitching duties for Oakdale, going just over six innings of keeping the Wildcats’ offense in check. Williams blasted a three-run homer in the 11-2 win, and teammate Braydon Stephens smashed a grand slam to put the contest out of reach.
The perfect season is another stripe on the shoulder of head coach Lonnie Cox, who has consistently turned in quality JV seasons, preparing his players for the demands and expectations of baseball at the next level.
