Oakdale High senior Marco Camacho stayed in the shadow of throwing phenom Tim House for all of the 2010 track and field season, but didn’t wait long to make a name for himself in 2011.
Camacho delivered Herculean throws in both the shot put and discus to win both events at the Sierra Tom-Moore Relays in Manteca on March 5.
His discus throw of 164 feet, 3.5 inches is one of the top throws in the state so far this season, and would have landed him sixth place honors, had he thrown it last year at a Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament that saw four at-large state qualifications in 2010. One of those at-large throws was a 176-foot bomb from House for a school record, a mark Camacho will likely be chasing this season.
The Mustang thrower earns Athlete of the Week honors from The Leader for his efforts at Oakdale’s first competition of the season.
His big throws will continue to be of interest as the track and field season progresses.
