The Friends of the Oakdale Library recently wrapped up its very successful annual used book sale. Once again the Oakdale Community showed its generosity. People from as far away as Turlock donated books and shoppers traveled the distance from Lodi to shop. Customers young and old, rich or poor, or in between found treasures and bargains. One customer purchased three bags of paperback suspense stories, not for her own enjoyment, but to send in care packages to the troops. A parent who home schools was delighted to find several history books, which she says her children love.
The sale also benefited other community organizations. Books were taken to Family Support Network and the Guardian House to supplement their children’s collections. And a whole set of books about goats was donated to the San Joaquin Stanislaus Cattlewomen to use at the Rotary Read-In. The unsold books were donated to Community Hospice to sell at their Hope Chest Thrift Stores, which helps to support their immeasurable service to the community.
The money generated by the sale helps purchase additional library materials and enhances the valuable programs offered by the Oakdale Library such as Little Scientist S.T.E.A.M. program, Oakdale Library Book Club, monthly craft programs, and grand prizes for the Summer Reading Challenge.
The Friends want to give a big shout out to the City of Oakdale, Mayor Pat Paul, City Staff, and to Gilton Resource Recovery for their co-operation and participation. We also want to thank members of the Oakdale Lions, Leos Club, River Oak 4-H Club and other volunteers for their Herculean efforts helping set up tables, move, sort and organize books, and for packing and cleaning up. Additionally we want to thank Community Hospice for picking up the books that didn’t sell. We would, of course be remiss if we didn’t thank all the people who donated the books and those who came to buy them. Thanks, thanks to those who are keeping reading alive and well in Oakdale!
