BETTY JEAN SERPA

Resident of Oakdale, CA and Former Resident of Livermore, CA

March 18, 1928-January 28, 2015. Livermore native and a 4th generation Californian, Betty passed away Wednesday evening at Doctors Hospital in Modesto.  She was a caregiver to many relatives and friends. Betty was a graduate of the historic Tassajara School, San Ramon Valley High School and Texas University Dental School.  She worked as a dental assistant for 22 years.  She was the head of dental nurses at the Job Corps Center in Pleasanton.  All of her life, she was actively involved as a 4-H leader and was a charter member of the Western Brahman Breeder Assn., and served as its Treasurer and Vice President.  She served as secretary of the Oakdale Irrigation District Taxpayers Assn. and loved attending meetings.  Betty was an avid sheep and cattle rancher exhibiting Brahman cattle at major shows in California, Nevada and Arizona.  She was also an avid Oakland Raiders and A’s fan.  Betty loved rodeos and attended the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for many years.  Betty was the family photographer, enjoyed playing piano and organ, and loved attending the concerts, ag events and sports events of family and friends, and could always be heard cheering loudly for those she loved. Betty was preceded by her parents Tom and Grace Bettencourt (Baptista) and survived by her husband of 68 years Stan of Oakdale; sons Doug (Karen) of Pleasant Hill; Carl (Nancy) of Escalon; grandchildren Jeffrey (Danelle) of Hughson; Jason (Jessica) of Whiteman AFB, MO; Kristy Sutherland (Russ) of Modesto and seven great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Doris Mitchell of Lincoln, CA. Friends and family are invited to a Rosary on Wednesday, February 4th at 7pm at Callaghan Mortuary in Livermore.  Mass will be held on Thursday, February 5th at 10am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Livermore.  Inurnment to follow at St. Michael’s Cemetary.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Oakdale.  Donations can be made to Betty’s favorite charities Help Hospitalized Veterans at www.hhv.org or sent to 36585 Penfield Lane, Winchester, CA 92596 or Family House at www.familyhouseinc.org or sent to 50 Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122.
