The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Aug. 20 through Monday, Aug. 26. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, AUG. 26
Battalion 2: Engines 3, 21, 23, 26 and Quint 22 conducted a walkthrough of United Paper. This was the site of a previous fire in a cardboard compactor system with fire on the roof and in the compactor itself. Captain McManus shared his arrival findings and how he laid out the fire with the group.
Engine 26 and Quint 22 spent time at Station 17 with firefighters in preparation for upcoming testing.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 provided area orientation with newly promoted BC from Stanislaus Consolidated.
BC1, BC2, BC3, and BC5 reviewed the Janopaul incident (AAR) and discussed operational issues for further review.
1:12 p.m. – Engine 27 and Engine 28 responded to a vehicle fire on Highway 120 near River Road. Crews arrived to find the engine compartment involved and quickly contained the fire.
SUNDAY, AUG. 25
Battalion 2: Stanislaus crews worked on station maintenance along with completing target solutions assignments.
MST BC’s 1, 2, and 3 got together with Quint 22 to run scenarios with new Battalion Chief Gerry Laird.
Battalion 5: Engine 28 trained on GPS use for the purpose of acreage calculation and track logs.
E27 completed signoffs on lowering stokes baskets off of a second story and EMS skills.
SATURDAY, AUG. 24
Battalion 2: Engines 2, 12, 21, and E27 (Battalion 5 engine) trained in preparation for an upcoming probationary test.
12:29 p.m. – The Denair Fire Department and several surrounding agencies responded to a vegetation fire in the Vincent and East Avenue area. Brush and Water Tender 23 also responded. The fire burned almost 10 acres and several outbuildings. The Stanislaus County FIU is investigating the fire. No injuries were reported.
Battalion 5: 10:11 a.m. – Brush 28, G26, OES4615 and BC2 responded to a vegetation fire on Eaton Road. Brush 28 arrived on scene with approximately half an acre of vegetation on fire. B28 assisted neighbors extinguishing the fire.
FRIDAY, AUG. 23
Battalion 2: 6 p.m. – Brush 23 and 24 responded to a tree and vegetation fire in the 1600 block of Oakdale-Waterford Highway. They arrived to find small grass and some trees on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. This is a reminder to shut down and let gas-powered equipment cool down before refueling.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 and E7 conducted hose training. Crews focused on RAM operations.
THURSDAY, AUG. 22
Battalion 5: Crews conducted station maintenance and apparatus checks.
Crews trained with probationary firefighters in preparation for their upcoming 10-month test.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21
Battalion 2: Mop up operations continued at the Mariposa Fire vegetation fire from August 20. The fire burned approximately five acres of river bottom, across from River Oaks Golf Course.
Battalion 5: Engines 27, 28 and 29 conducted engine company operations training in Oakdale.
1:05 p.m. – Engines 28, 27 and BC5 responded to an injury accident with reports of a vehicle fire on Rodden Road and Valley Home Road. Crews arrived on scene and found a single vehicle rolled over into a property. No vehicle fire and the driver had self-extricated. Oak Valley Ambulance arrived on scene and transported the patient. CHP is investigating the crash.
TUESDAY, AUG. 20
Battalion 2: Engine 26 and Quint 22 spent the morning at Station 17 training on 10-month firefighter test preparation including ladders and saw work.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Companies conducted training in their respective FMA’s.
Engine 28 trained at the RFTC to help prepare their probationary firefighter for his upcoming test.
4:09 p.m. – Engine 29, Water Rescue 28 and BC5 responded to the report of an overturned jet ski at Woodward Reservoir. While enroute Sheriff’s Officers arrived on scene and advised all occupants were out of the water. All fire units cancelled the response.
