The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, July 14 through Monday, July 20. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JULY 20
Battalion 2: 3:46 p.m. – Quint 22 was dispatched to the 100 block of B Street in Empire for a vegetation fire. Upon their arrival, they found a fire in the alley involving vegetation, trees, and a fence, with flames extending into a garage. Captain 22 immediately upgraded the response to a working residential structure fire, bringing Engines 1, 3, 5, 9, 23, BC1, BC2, and Medic 1. E23 was positioned in the alley between B and C streets; Q22 was on C street, and between the two units they had four attack lines working to control the fire. A second alarm was requested, bringing Engines 19, 21, and Quint 18. After about 45 minutes, the fire was brought under control. Stanislaus FIU is investigating the cause of the fire.
Battalion 5: Engine 28 and E9 worked on auto extrication training at the Oakdale Auto Recycling Yard, which was gracious enough to donate cars for this exercise.
Century 21 of Oakdale donated several new life jackets to MFD. These life jackets will be at local fire stations for the public to check out and use.
10 a.m. – OES 4615, OES 4617, WT 27 and BC5 assisted Cal Fire with a vegetation fire, Highway 108 with a cross of the Rushing Hill Lookout Road. Crews held the fire to 20 acres. The cause is under investigation.
SUNDAY, JULY 19
Battalion 2: 1:31 p.m. – Engines 9, 4617, 4618, Grass 21, Water Tenders 21, 27, and BC2 responded to the 5300 block of Claus Road for a vegetation fire. BC2 was the first to arrive and found the fire to be out. The balance of the response was canceled. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Battalion 5: 8:19 p.m. – Engine 26 and BC5 responded to the 2000 block of Topeka Street in Riverbank for a cardiac arrest.
SATURDAY, JULY 18
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies trained on wildland firefighting with Engine 31 from Battalion 4.
Battalion 5: Engine 28’s crew stopped by the Oakdale Morning Market on Saturday morning to interact with the community.
Crews in Battalion 5 trained in their respective territories.
6:52 p.m. – Water Rescue 29, Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 were dispatched to a water rescue on the Stanislaus River east of Oakdale. Two rafters had their raft deflate and were stranded. The Water Rescue located them and brought them to an awaiting SO vehicle to be driven back to their vehicle. There were no injuries reported.
FRIDAY, JULY 17
Battalion 2: 4:10 p.m. – Engine 24, 23, Quint 22, and BC2 responded to Yosemite Boulevard in Waterford for a possible structure fire. E24 arrived first and secured power to the residence and isolated the issue.
Battalion 5: Crews in Battalion 5 trained in their respective territories.
8:59 a.m. – Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to a solo vehicle into a telephone pole on Stearns Road in Oakdale. The driver was uninjured.
THURSDAY, JULY 16
Battalion 2: Crews attended Quarterly EMS training at the RFTC.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Battalion 5 companies rotated through the RFTC for Quarterly EMS Training.
Jett rode along with Engine 27 for the day. FF Jett responded to over 10 calls during the day, trained with the crew, performed all of the daily tasks, and enjoyed a great dinner at Fire Station 27. FF Jett even got to extinguish a smoldering grass fire. Thank you, Jett, for all your hard work!
After returning from a call in Riverbank, Engine 27’s crew noticed a group of kids selling lemonade to help raise money for their dance trip. The crew took the time and stopped to enjoy a tasty lemonade.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 15
Battalion 2: Crews attended Quarterly EMS training at the RFTC.
Engine 21, Battalion 2, SSL prevention and Cal Fire inspected and pre-planned a warehouse that stores fireworks for the area.
Battalion 5: Companies rotated through the RFTC for Quarterly EMS training.
Engine 29 conducted station maintenance at Station 30 in Valley Home.
Oakdale Chamber of Commerce Leadership group took a tour of Fire Station 28. Crews took the time to show them the fire station, and all of the fire equipment assigned there. The visit was very interactive, crews talked about the level of service provided through our contracts for service, closest resource dispatching and backfill of resources during incident draw down.
10:30 a.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28, Grass 4618, Escalon WT1-1, BC5 and BC202 responded to a report of a vegetation fire in the 5000 block of Pleasant Valley in Valley Home. Engine 29 arrived at scene to find a small vegetation fire that had gotten into a canvas shed and some trees threatening the residence. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire preventing it from spreading to the home. Companies remained on scene for roughly one hour for mop up.
4 p.m. – Brush 28, Brush 23, OES 4618, OES 4617, WT27, BC5 along with Cal Fire TCU responded to the report of a vegetation fire at Woodward Lake T Island. Battalion 5 arrived on scene with a small vegetation fire on the lakeshore with no threat to the surrounding vegetation. Brush 28 remained on scene for mop up and the remainder of the response was cancelled.
TUESDAY, JULY 14
Battalion 2: Crews completed a sump as part of the probationary training manual.
Engine 26 attended the City of Riverbank Splash Tour at Castleberg Park and provided some additional water to the participants.
Battalion 5: 2:27 p.m. – Engine 9, B23, B24, OES 4617, WT 21 and WT 27 responded to a vegetation fire in the 7000 block of Kemper Road. Crews arrived at scene and found about an eighth of an acre of grass burning. The fire was quickly brought under control. The cause is under investigation.
