On Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael, 47 seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students from 24 counties throughout California competed in the 2018-2019 California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship. Anisha Rao, an eighth-grade student from Alameda County, became the California State Junior High Spelling Bee Champion. Violet Finch, an eighth-grade student from Marin County, finished second and Sarah Yee, a seventh-grade student from Placer County finished third.
Three other students made it to the final round of competition, finishing in the following order:
Fourth Place – Alisha Chakravarty, an eighth-grade student from Stanislaus County
Fifth Place – Mark Salama, a seventh-grade student from Marin County
Sixth Place – Rose Bracken, an eighth-grade student from Inyo County,
Abigail Wagner, an eighth-grade student from Humboldt County,
Nicole Nguyen, a seventh-grade student from Merced County and
Gurbanni Pannu, a seventh-grade student from Stanislaus County
The California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship was coordinated by the Marin County Office of Education. The Spelling Master was Barrett Schaefer.
Representing Marin County were: Violet Finch, an eighth-grade student from Ross School and
Mark Salama, a seventh-grade student from Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
