Knights Ferry News 7-14-21

The Jim McCarthy’s garage next to the church caught fire on Friday afternoon and an army of community members jumped into action until the fire department arrived and was ready to fight the fire. James Turner, the Feichters, Tom and Mike Wright, Eric Sinkevich, Brent Noon Sr., Rick Maisel, Don from the campground, and Ed Fortune all helped Jim’s son, Sean McCarthy fight the fire using garden hoses, and Bryce Hobbs ran down to the local fire department to get help. When the fire crews arrived, the local firemen set up hoses while Cal Fire created a defensible space. Shortly after, at least 30 other Modesto firefighters arrived to help with the fire. In the end, Jim’s garage is severely damaged but Jim is safe! Thank you to all those who helped in any way to contain the fire and protect our town!

While this incident was fairly contained, some of the locals now see the need for the town to look into what it will cost to own a fire hose that can connect to a fire hydrant. Consider attending the next Fire Protection meeting to see what we can do to even better protect our town. Finally, this was a huge testament of how important it is to have fire personnel 24/7 in Knights Ferry and as a town we need to continue to encourage our tax budget to continue to prioritize funding to our rural fire department!

I am sure everyone in the area felt it but we had an earthquake! Most homes in Knights Ferry are quite old, I know our home was built before indoor plumbing and there are homes built before our home in town. The earthquake shook up our homes pretty good. Heather Voortman at the Creamery said she was serving some out-of-state customers at the time of the earthquake. I bet it confirmed the state’s reputation as the earthquake state! It may be the Californian in me but I’ll take these small earthquakes over a tornado any day.
