When the Knights Ferry Garden Club ladies arrived at the home of Carol Davis last Wednesday they were met with her very large downed oak tree. It fell sometime in the night and Carol had not heard it fall. It just missed the house. Saturday there were six chainsaws going! She has a LOT of firewood now!

In 1861-1862 there was a great flood in California, with 66 inches of rain in Los Angeles, 10-15 feet of snow in the Sierras then warm rain making the Central Valley an inland sea. The bridge in Knights Ferry, built by David Locke and the Stanislaus Bridge and Ferry Company, was completely destroyed. Sacramento was under 10 feet of water. The Native Americans in the area had left to higher ground weeks before this happened. They knew it was coming by reading signs in nature. As William Brewer reported in his book “Up and Down California 1860” coming over the pass from San Francisco “all I could see was water stretching all the way to the Sierras.” Our river now is getting higher but will not flood because of New Melones.
