Varsity Lady Mustangs Drop Pair Of Home Games

The Oakdale High School varsity girls basketball team suffered a pair of home losses this past week. Oakdale (13-11, 1-7) fell to visiting Manteca (16-7, 7-1) 68-55 and then to East Union (15-8, 6-2) 53-44.

On Wednesday, Jan. 23 the girls started the game off well as they had a 16-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. With 5:41 to play, Grace Higle pulled down an offensive rebound and used the glass for a put back to go up 20-14. Manteca tied the game at 20 and took a 25-21 lead but Higle completed the rare four point play to tie the game at 25 with 1:31 remaining in the first half. Manteca finished the second quarter on a 6-1 run to go into halftime up 31-26.

Amber Robinson scored a basket with 3:02 left in the third to trim the deficit to 43-35. The Lady Mustangs trailed by 10 late in the third and were down 48-38 after the third quarter. Manteca maintained their double digit lead throughout most of the fourth quarter, but a pair of late three’s by Alicia Platt and Higle made the score 68-55 as time expired.

Platt finished with 22 points on the night and Higle finished with 21.

Friday night the girls played an exciting game against East Union. Kayden Legan connected on a corner three to give Oakdale a 20-17 lead with 2:43 remaining in the half. Legan found Higle in the corner and dished out an assist on a Higle three-pointer to put Oakdale up 23-19. Later in the half, Platt connected on a three ball to bring the score to 26-23 Oakdale.

In the third quarter a Robinson steal and assist to Higle gave Oakdale a 35-33 lead with 3:06 to go. Offense for both teams slowed down as the score went into the fourth quarter with Oakdale up 38-33. Things unraveled for the Lady Mustangs in the fourth quarter. With six minutes remaining in regulation, Higle connected on a three ball on top of the key to go up 41-35. But Oakdale then surrendered their lead and the Lancers finished the game on a 19-3 run, handing Oakdale their fourth consecutive loss.

This week Oakdale will be on the road when they take on Sierra (11-10, 1-6) on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in Manteca. On Friday night the girls will be in Modesto when they take on Central Catholic (15-9, 2-6). Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

The young team continues their dominance in the Valley Oak League as they defeated Manteca 47-22 behind Aiden Hill’s 14 points and seven steals. Madison Jones racked up a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds along with six steals. Abby Cogburn also had 11 points and six rebounds for the team.

Following that win they took on East Union and won 54-46. Hill led the team with 24 points. Alexia Martin had eight points and seven rebounds.

 

FRESHMEN

The freshman girls played a pair of games this past week and suffered a pair of losses. The girls lost to Manteca 34-30 and 40-39 to East Union. Against Manteca Ruby Fink scored a game high 10 points and Roxy Anderson added six points. Hannah Beth Norman scored a game high 10 points against East Union. The game was tied at 18 at halftime and Oakdale led by three entering the fourth quarter. Savanna Borba had nine points.
