Top five cross country finish at invitational

Members of the Oakdale High School cross country teams competed in the Kim Duyst Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. This annual event was hosted at River Oak Golf Course in Ceres, featuring teams from throughout the Sac-Joaquin Section.

For the varsity girls, there were 23 teams competing in a five-kilometer race that featured 206 total runners. Oakdale finished fifth overall. The Mustangs had a handful of runners who placed in the top 50. Freshman Addison Wylie placed 17th overall with a time of 19:39. Senior Ava Calandro placed 36th with a time of 20:37. Not too far behind Calandro was junior Jordan Wylie, who placed 41st overall at 20:44. Just two seconds later was sophomore Taylor Reams to place 45th overall. A few steps later junior Bradie Evans finished in 48th place.

With 39 teams competing in the varsity boys division, Oakdale placed fourth overall as a team. There were 379 runners taking the five-kilometer course. The Mustangs had three runners finish in the top 50. Senior Ismael Dominguez placed 15th overall at 16:04. Jacob Cavanaugh, also a senior, placed 20th at 16:09. Junior Sean Muturi finished in 33rd place with a time of 16:28.

Junior varsity runners also competed over the weekend. For the frosh/soph girls it was a seventh-place team finish, with 20 teams in the field. Summer McGinish placed 21st overall and Anevay Carlson placed 50th out of 132 runners. The frosh/soph boys placed eighth overall in the two-kilometer race. Thirty-one teams and 301 runners competed and Oakdale had a trio of top 50 runners. Sean Taylor finished 11th overall and Daniel Anderson and Roman Moreno placed 24th and 25th respectively.

“We had some good performances overall but we have a lot of work to do. The first thing we have to do is get ready for our league opener on Wednesday,” said coach Guy Fowler. “We have to be ready to compete because everybody in the league is trying to knock us off the top spot.”

Oakdale will compete in the VOL #1 on Wednesday evening and then travel for the Frogtown Invitational in Angels Camp on Saturday, Sept. 21.
