Three Wins On Books In Busy Week For Hoop Girls

Three games and three wins was the story of the week for the Oakdale High School girls varsity basketball team. The Lady Mustangs picked up a 71-25 road win over Central Valley on Monday, Dec. 10 and followed up with a pair of home wins over Ripon (54-48) and Ripon Christian (64-52). In their home win over Ripon, Oakdale trailed by a dozen at halftime but did not lose sight of winning. Outscoring Ripon 33-15 in the second half, Oakdale came out with the victory.

Kayden Legan scored a game high 18 points in the comeback win, while Grace Higle scored 15 and Alicia Platt scored nine.

“It was a challenge but we worked as a team to overcome the halftime deficit,” said Platt.

On Wednesday, Dec. 12 the score was tied at 11 after one quarter of play. Oakdale, however, pulled away from the visiting Lady Knights using a 10-0 run to start the second quarter, forcing a timeout by Ripon Christian. Krista Anderson connected on a jumper with five seconds left to give Oakdale a 31-21 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Tayler Lamb’s offensive rebound and put back gave Oakdale a 37-25 advantage with 5:03 left. Legan gave Oakdale a 49-36 lead with a three point field goal from the corner at the end of the third quarter. The visitors began the fourth quarter strong with an 8-2 run forcing a timeout by Oakdale. The Lady Mustangs regrouped and a jumper by Amber Robinson gave Oakdale a 64-46 lead with 3:12 left to play.

In the win Platt scored a game high 19 points and Higle added 17. With the win, Oakdale improved to 8-2 on the season. The Lady Mustangs won’t be back home until Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they host Sierra. This week Oakdale took on Gregori in Modesto on Tuesday, Dec. 18 following The Leader’s press time. Friday they will travel to take on Buhach Colony and then will play in the Pitman Tournament beginning Thursday, Dec. 27.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

The junior varsity girls lost 46-34 against Ripon. They trailed 33-16 at the half but could not complete the rally. Madi Jones had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The young Lady Mustangs bounced back with a 55-25 home win over Ripon Christian behind another Jones double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The girls only allowed six points to RC in the first half.

 

FRESHMEN

The freshman girls lost to Ripon 32-24 but bounced back with a 51-12 victory over Waterford. In the win Roxy Anderson scored 12 points and the Oakdale defense allowed only six points in the first half, and held Waterford scoreless in the third quarter.
