The NASCAR Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 over the weekend at Sonoma Raceway featured a repeat winner in Shane van Gisbergen as well as a special memorial for the late Kyle Busch. The Cup Series 350 race was run on Sunday, with the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race taking the track on Saturday, June 27.
Famous for his on-track competitiveness, Busch – who passed away in May – earned two NASCAR cup series championships (2015 and 2019). He won the Sonoma event in 2015, after missing eleven events, then went on to win four races in a row, including the season finale in Homestead-Miami, to capture his first championship. As a special memorial, drivers are honored on the completion lap, based on their car number. Busch’s car number at the time of his passing was #8. At the completion of the eighth lap this past weekend, there was a moment of silence, where all the fans and the announcers went silent, with fans standing and holding up eight fingers in honor of the Kyle Busch, while the cars were still racing, on the track. Busch had 63 Cup Series wins (tied for the most at the time of his passing) and 69 truck series wins (current record for most), with a total of 234 wins across all three of the national series categories.
For the second year in a row, Shane van Gisbergen took the checkered flag at the Toyota-Save Mart 350 in his #97 Red Bull Chevrolet on Sunday, June 28. After struggling to a number six qualifying spot, he quickly showed why he is one of the best road circuit drivers in NASCAR, as he went on to lead for 74 laps of the 110-lap event. The NASCAR Cup Series events are divided into segments (three at this event) and the pole sitter, Ty Gibbs won the first two, gaining the bonus points. Gibbs collected the segment wins as Gisbergen’s team pitted nearing the end of each segment. But Gibbs was unable to hold off Gisbergen in Sunday’s race and his car developed some handling problems, leading to a fourth-place finish. As was the case in 2025, Chase Brisco would unsuccessfully attempt to chase down Gisbergen, and would finish second. For Shane van Gisbergen it would be his second win of the season and eighth Cup Series victory of his career to go along with six wins in the Busch/O’Reilly Series. His superb road course driving skills come from his years of racing in one of Australia’s most competitive road racing series, where he was a champion. In addition to winning the Cup Series event, he also won the O’Reilly series event Saturday, leading for 66 of the 79 laps.
